A note about record items
Most researchers will use Archives Investigator to find information about what record items are held.
However it is important to note that not all record
items have yet been listed in Archives Investigator. There are millions of items and the task will take many years.
You may need to study the information in a record series to determine if items from that series are likely to be relevant to you.
A range of other guides is also available to help you identify records relevant to your research.
Archives Investigator is available on both State Records' web site (www.records.nsw.gov.au)
and the City of Sydney Council's web site (www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au). Archives
Investigator appears the same at each site but searches only the host institution's
archives control system database.
Archives Investigator was developed for the State Records Authority of NSW
and the City of Sydney by Praxa Limited. Version 2.0 was developed for the City
of Sydney by

The name refers to HMS Investigator in which Matthew Flinders completed the first
circumnavigation of Australia, 1801-1803, and mapped much of the coast for the first
time.
