Welcome to Archives Investigator, our online archives information and access system.

Archives Investigator provides descriptions of our archival records, and the functional and administrative contextual information about them, to help you evaluate what records might be relevant to your research.

The application helps you find archives relevant to your research through:

  • a choice of flexible search tools, from simple to sophisticated, and
  • a web of links for point-and-click navigation and browsing.

While a wealth of information is already available, State Records holds more than 15,000 series and millions of individual items and only a small proportion have so far been listed in Archives Investigator. It will be added to continuously as new material is received.

If you have not used Archives Investigator before, we recommend that you click on the above buttons to learn how to make the best use of it to help you with your research.

Archives Investigator is available on both State Records' web site (www.records.nsw.gov.au) and the City of Sydney Council's web site (www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au). Archives Investigator appears the same at each site but searches only the host institution's archives control system database.

Archives Investigator was developed for the State Records Authority of NSW and the City of Sydney by Praxa Limited. Version 2.0 was developed for the City of Sydney by Mirocle Pty. Ltd. © 2000 State Records Authority of NSW and © 2000, 2007 City of Sydney.

The name refers to HMS Investigator in which Matthew Flinders completed the first circumnavigation of Australia, 1801-1803, and mapped much of the coast for the first time.
